Welcome
Wozzy Dias is an enigmatic and elusive photographer who defies categorising. His documentary style work transcends from editorial to fine art seamlessly; creating ‘magical’ juxtapositions. By definition Dias is a story teller without words although some of his exhibits are in fact captioned.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, Wozzy's are worth a million.
Wrote Barry Lategan world renowned fashion photographer who discovered Twiggy, referring to Wozzy’s ten year ‘journey’ on the London Underground.
Over the past few decades Wozzy Dias has divided his time between New York City and London. In New York he worked mostly as a press photographer for the Daily News, New York Post, The Downtown Express, The Villager and the Brooklyn Bay news. In the late 1990’s Wozzy took a sabbatical and worked as a Junior Asset Management Broker for GBI Capital and Ladenburg Thalmann. The Events of 9/11 ended that pursuit. Dias was under World Trade Centre Tower 2 when it imploded. He was hospitalised at Brooklyns Coney Island Hospital and survived.
His passion for Jazz was compounded when he married Jazz vocalist Carla Margolis, the Daughter of Legendary Jazz Saxophonist Sam Margolis and was given a solo exhibit ‘Portraits in Jazz’ at The Citi Corp Saint Peters Jazz Ministry NYC. The series spanned 10 years and Included, Miles Davis, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman and many contemporaries.
Back in London Wozzy Dias roamed both overground and underground with a Leica and producing powerful socio documentaries. Born and raised in the analog era he now works mostly with digital files but hopes to go back to film.

Wozzy by Wozzy

If my work needs describing then I am not a good communicator. If I have to explain myself then I am a coward, When I was 7 years old my father a forensic Criminologist gave me his Nikon S2 range finder with three lenses. A 35mm, a 50mm and 135. I never used the 135 partly because it had fungus on the rear element and because it limited my view. The 50 mm was a little better but the 35mm was my story teller. When I bought my first Leicas, I graduated to a 21mm and a 28mm.
As a photographer I feel privileged to be able to simply observe without judgment. When I knelt in front of Miles Davis’ Horn I was humbled. Capturing street scenes overground and underground, the ‘magical moments’ make me realise that I am but a lucky little spec and grateful for the opportunity.
In New York I worked as a wedding photographer for many years with clients including Time Life’s Financial Executor, John McCarthy and always felt privileged and humbled by every event I served. Although this was a lucrative business it wasn’t truly who I was. I wasn’t prepared to become a businessman and surrender my soul.
And as you’ve guessed I am back roaming the streets. See you at the opening of my new works in 2023.
